After a pause of three years, the International Fab Lab Symposium and Conference was held again during the last week of July in the city of Thimphu, the capital of the Kingdom of Bhutan. Organised by MIT’s Center for Bits and Atoms, Fab Foundation and Bhutan’s Druk Holding and Investment company, the conference welcomed representatives from Fab Labs and Universities, artists, makers, innovators and entrepreneurs from all over the world.
Fablab Shanghai, the digital fabrication lab of the College of Design and Innovation of Tongji University was invited by the organisers and, from July 22 to August 1st, the vice-director of the lab, Saverio Silli, traveled to the remote country of Bhutan to participate in the conference.

Fab Lab

The Fab Lab Conference is a precious opportunity to showcase academic work, share ideas, collaborate on projects, and learn about the latest trends and developments in digital fabrication and related fields. Prof. Neil Gershenfeld, director of MIT’s Center for Bits and Atoms, presented this year’s theme “Designing Resilient Futures”, a crucial concept for a small developing country like Bhutan, landlocked on the altitudes of the Himalayan mountains. The country invested a great deal on digital fabrication laboratories, relying on the Fab Lab concept and network to create a framework to find locally available innovation solutions and accessible manufacturing capacity.

On the first day of the conference, Saverio Silli presented the new research paper written together with Prof. Francesca Valsecchi. The paper, titled “Integrating Electronic Circuit Design and Fabrication in a Design Studio: Discussing Hands-on Learning Approach to Engage Undergraduate Students in Ecologically-Relevant Design” examines the experience of designing a cross-disciplinary curriculum for D&I’s third year’s design studio. As a collaboration between Fablab Shanghai and the Ecology and Cultures Innovation Lab, the course integrates electronic circuit design and fabrication to support the creation of ecologically relevant design propositions. The paper details how the technical knowledge was used to support the design research for the studio's brief, which aimed at contributing to new forms of connection between citizens and Nature, fostering the creation of ecological knowledge.

On the third day, this work was awarded the best research paper presented in the conference by an academic committee including professors of Umea University and Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences. In their motivations, they highlight the relevancy of the research in the direction of cross-disciplinary design education, with the application of technology to move towards a more-than-human approach of the design discipline. The paper is available in the proceedings of the Conference at the following address:

Saverio Silli also organised a lecture and workshop focused on Design Education and Thinking-Through-Making and took part in numerous meetings and talks with representatives of the Global Fab Lab Network and the Fab Lab Asia Network, representing Tongji University and the College of Design and Innovation on a stage including people from more than 90 countries.

Fablab O Shanghai (FABO) is the Digital Fabrication Lab of the College of Design and Innovation, Tongji University. It operates as a key node of the Fab Lab global network led by MIT and it is the first built Fab Lab in China. Having long been committed to design-led crossover, FABO continues to be active at the forefront of research and practice in “innovation education”, “distributed manufacturing” and “artificial intelligence innovation”. FABO has made great efforts to develop an innovative STEDM curriculum that integrates multiple disciplines and technologies, with Design Thinking woven throughout the whole pathway and the UN Sustainable Development Goals as the ultimate challenge for students’ Project-Based Learning.
